In the very heart of Banja Luka, between the Banski dvor and the City Administration, is the Cathedral of Christ the Savior – one of the most recognizable symbols of the city and an unmissable destination for every visitor. History of the temple
On the site of today's Cathedral, there used to be the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, the construction of which began in 1925. The temple was completed a few years later, and was solemnly consecrated in 1939. Unfortunately, during World War II it was severely damaged in bombing, and soon after it was completely demolished by order of the then occupation authorities. For more than half a century, no new temple was allowed to be built in this area, which left the town without its most important Orthodox sanctuary.
Renovation began in the early 1990s. The foundations were consecrated in 1993, and after years of work, the temple once again shone in its full glory. The first liturgy was served in 2004, while it was finally consecrated in 2009 under the name Cathedral of Christ the Savior.
Impressive architecture
The temple was built in the Serbian-Byzantine style, modeled on the original building. Its golden domes dominate the panorama of the city center and are visible from almost all parts of the inner city.
Top-quality natural materials were used for the renovation. The facade is covered in travertine, while the domes are made of gilded stainless steel, which gives them a distinctive shine. The bell tower, over 47 meters high, is equipped with clocks on all four sides, and the bells were made in Austria and represent one of the protective sounds of Banja Luka.
